Philani Zulu downplays importance in Kaizer Chiefs line-up

Kaizer Chiefs defender Philani Zulu is relishing his starting berth of late but says he will readily relinquish his place for the benefit of the team.
Zulu has enjoyed a positive start to his career at Chiefs, having made 11 starts since coming on as a substitute to replace Tsepo Masilela, who suffered an ankle injury in their 2-1 league defeat to SuperSport United in August.
The 25-year-old, who arrived on a free transfer from Maritzburg United at the start of the season, has maintained his place under Steve Komphela despite the presence of the more experienced Sibusiso Khumalo.
However, the Pietermaritzburg-born fullback has played down his value in the line-up and says he is merely focused on producing his best to aid the team, but would step aside should anyone else be able to contribute more.
"I wouldn't say [I'm close to cementing my position in the team] because anything can happen from here onwards," said a modest Zulu.
"It's just important that whenever I get the chance I make the best of it and make sure, not that I keep my place but, I give my best in helping the team.
"If ever someone else comes in and they do a better job then I'll support them because, for me, it's all about winning as a team.
"It's not for me to say I want to maintain my position, because I might maintain it and not be doing well, so it's just for me to give my best and compliment the players [around me]."
Masilela is expected to be sidelined for at least the rest of the year after undergoing ankle surgery, while Khumalo's unreliability in remaining injury-free has assuredly put Zulu ahead in the pecking order.
