SA players abroad: Another goal for Dino Ndlovu as Bafana regulars struggle for game-time

Striker Dino Ndlovu netted his fourth goal of the season, while a host of Bafana Bafana regulars failed to make the squad or get off the bench for their respective clubs.

Dolly was for the seventh league game in a row an unused substitute as Montpellier drew 0-0 with third-placed Olympique Lyon, having yet to see any first team league action since September. Montpellier are now up to eighth in the standings after 13 matches played.

Still no sign of Erasmus at Rennes, with the South African yet to play for the club this season. They lost 2-1 to Strasbourg over the weekend, leaving them 11th on the log.

Jacobs played the full 90 minutes for Livingston as they beat lower league Glenafton Athletic 2-0 in the third round of the Scottish FA Cup to advance to the next round.

Jacobs’ Queen of the South could only draw 0-0 away at League Two side Montrose in their third round FA Cup clash, with the replay set for Tuesday evening.

Following his red card last time out, Jali was suspended and had to sit out Oostende’s league match-up against Standard Liege, with ended 0-0. Oostende are now four matches unbeaten, and sit 13th on the log.

Mahlangu was not in the squad as Romanian club Dinamo Bucuresti went down 2-0 to table-toppers CFR Cluj, leaving them seventh on the log after 18 games played. 

After doing international duty for Bafana Bafana last week, Manyama was not in the squad for Konyaspor as they drew 1-1 with Antalyaspor in the Turkish top-flight. Since his move in December, the former Cape Town City captain has made just one league start, with four substitute appearances for his club who lie 15th on the Turkish table.

Marakis earned made his 13th appearance for Portuguese second division club Uniao Medeira as they beat fifth-placed Freamunde 4-2, leaving them 16th on the log after 14 games.

Mokotjo was an unused substitute as Brentford’s eight-match unbeaten run came to an end following a 2-0 loss to third-placed Cardiff City, as they dropped to 13th in the standings after 17 games.

Mothiba came on for the last half an hour as Valenciennes recorded a 3-1 win away at Borg-en-Bresse, lifting them to 11th on the Ligue II table after 15 games played. 

Despite his side losing their goalkeeper to a straight red card on 30  minutes, Ndlovu netted his fourth goal in eight starts for Qarabag as they earned a 2-0 win at home to Sumqayit to maintain their one point advantage at the top of the log with a game in hand.

Ntlhe was taken off at half-time in English club Rochdale’s 3-1 loss to Oldham Athletic as they slipped down to 22nd out of 24 teams in League Two.

When it rains, it pours, as Polish side Pogon Szczecin had a defender red-carded as they suffered their 11th loss of the season, going down 1-0 to Wisla Krakow. Nunes played the full 90 minutes, having yet to miss a game this campaign, with Pogon propping up the table with just nine points to their name.

Phiri was not named in the matchday squad as Guingamp drew 1-1 with Angers, leaving them 14th in Ligue 1.

Rantie was absent from the squad for a fourth time in succession as Genclerbirligi lost 2-1 to Kayserispor, as they remain joint-bottom of the log.

Following his decision to shun Bafana Bafana, Serero played 83 minutes for Vitesse as they went down 4-2 to Groningen, dropping down to sixth on the log. Lars Veldwijk was an unused substitute for Groningen.

Untersee played the full 90 minutes in Empoli’s 5-3 victory over Cesena. Empoli are now sixth in Serie B, but just two points adrift of leaders Bari.

Straight off international duty, Zungu was thrown into Amiens’ starting line-up for their big-game clash against AS Monaco, which, after taking the lead, they drew 1-1. Amiens are now 19th in Ligue 1, while Monaco sit second, six points behind leaders PSG.
