Cardoso: Komphela has a lot of balls

Kaizer Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso has lauded coach Steve Komphela for remaining steadfast in his efforts to  land his first trophy of his coaching career.

Komphela has been involved in coaching both at national team and domestic level for close to two decades, since retiring as a former Bafana Bafana midfielder.

He has previously lead the under-23 and senior national teams, as well as Free State Stars, Maritzburg United before taking up his present role at Naturena in July 2015.

However, the 50-year-old tactician has yet to smell the sweet scent of holding aloft an item of silverware , having twice missed out at the final hurdle in his first season at Chiefs.

This year’s Telkom Knockout is the closes he has come since then, as reigning league champions Bidvest Wits stand in the way of his third cup final appearance as a coach.

Cardoso feels the players now owe it to Komphela to go all the way to lifting this cup, for his role in always standing in the firing line even when he is blameless.

“I think Steve has a lot of balls.  He handles the pressure and takes [the criticism] from all the fans, while at the same time taking the pressure off us,” said the former Ea Lla Koto centre-back.

“At least he can handle it, and I think this trophy we have to win for him. As a coach he’s never won a trophy in domestic football, and we owe it to him.”

Kick-off of today’s semi-final at the Bidvest Stadium is scheduled for 15h30.
