SuperSport United coach Eric Tinkler will make late decision on whether to play Jeremy Brockie

SuperSport United coach Eric Tinkler has a big decision to make on top scorer Jeremy Brockie ahead of the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final in Lubumbashi on Sunday.

Brockie, who has bagged 10 goals in the competition this year, is part of the New Zealand side that will play a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Peru at 04h15 South African time (Thursday).

After the match, the striker will travel to South Africa via Brazil, and will connect to the DRC on Friday morning, the day SuperSport travel to Lubumbashi.

Travelling for over 24 hours is likely to take its toll on the lethal striker.

“Brockie will land the morning we leave. We will assess him once we are there. It’s not like we are blessed with a massive squad. We are travelling with 17 players. We can only deal with it once he lands,” Tinkler said.

Tinkler has also spoken about the difficulty of having to prepare for the final without the Bafana Bafana players.

Captain Dean Furman, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, defenders Morgan Gould and Clayton Daniels, and striker Bradley Grobler were part of the squad that played Senegal in back-to-back World Cup qualifiers. The players are expected to land in South Africa on Thursday and will travel with the rest of the team on Friday.

Gould, however, is suspended for both matches and will be replaced by Tefu Mashamaite in central defence.

“We would have loved to have had at least a week to prepare with the full squad, but that’s not the case. I can sit here and complain about it and tomorrow we going to say the coach is giving excuses, but that is the truth,” said Tinkler.

“Who do we blame here? Do we blame CAF? Do we blame SAFA? Was the date the right date to be playing such a big final? Those are the questions I ask. But we can’t do anything about it. We’ve got to do the best we can.”

SuperSport have been training in Rustenburg on astro turf since Monday and returned today. The game on Sunday will be played on astro turf.
