Bruce Bvuma fighting for Kaizer Chiefs chance amid competition from Itumeleng Khune and Brilliant Khuzwayo

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma insists he is not at Naturena to merely add numbers.

The 22-year-old has yet to feature this season after making his PSL debut against Cape Town City in April when big-name duo Itumeleng Khune and Brilliant Khuzwayo were both injured.

Khune is the undisputed first-choice keeper when fit at Chiefs, with Khuzwayo a more than capable replacement.

Bvuma has therefore had to be content with reserve team football, having played in the 1-1 draw with Orlando Pirates in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on the weekend.

"Of course I'm pushing hard and I'm not there to add numbers," Bvuma tells

"I have a lot of respect for them [Khune and Khuzwayo] but at the and of the day I'm not here to add numbers. I'm also here for my family, I'm also here to fight for myself also.

"But bear in mind that Chiefs have one of the best goalkeepers. I'm very grateful that I'm working with guys like Itu, Brilliant and goalkeeper coach Brian Baloyi, who was also my role model. So I'm really grateful for that."

Meanwhile, Bvuma hopes to get his distribution skills to the same exceptional level as Khune. He was having mixed success against Bucs with his attempts at the side-volley pass, a specialty of Khune's.

"What I know is that practise makes perfect and if I practise every day I think one day I'll get it right."
