KickOff.com rates the individual performances from Bafana Bafana's defeat to Senegal in their 2018 FIFA World Cup Group D qualifier in Polokwane.
Itumeleng Khune - 6
Wasn’t threatened much, and had a relatively quiet second half. Made a good, improvising save to deny Mane from close range in the 38th minute, but was undone by Mkhize who knocked the ball into goal.
Thamsanqa Mkhize – 6
Showed composure and maturity on the ball, and good aggression in attack, running at Senegalese defenders and looking to create a threat down the right flank. Unfortunate to be in the wrong place at the wrong time to send the ball into his own net in the 38th minute.
Morgan Gould – 6
Didn’t look convincing in covering the necessary spaces in defense. Caught flat footed, unaware of the run made by Sakho as Senegal scored the opener in the 12th minute. Allowed Sakho way too much time and space to pick out the run of Mane for the second goal.
Clayton Daniels – 6
Not a very convincing performance. Lacked the energy and aggression needed to get ahead of the Senegalese attackers. Dropped off too much to allow Mane to play a through pass for Sakho to score the opener.
Sifiso Hlanti – 5
Looked a touch off the pace, was often caught out of position and left Daniels exposed to deal with the threat of Mane and Ndiaye down the flank. Failed to track back quickly and was absent for both of Senegal’s goals, which built up from his side of the park.
Dean Furman – 7
Showed excellent determination and covered good ground. Wasn’t shy to get stuck in, in 50/50 challenges, and won possession in key areas to kill off numerous Senegal counter-attacks. Wasn’t afraid to have a few efforts from range.
Kamohelo Mokotjo – 6
Covered good ground and always availed himself to support in defense and attack. Kept it simple and neat, but looked afraid to take the risk with searching through-balls.
Themba Zwane – 6
Movement on and off the ball was lively and always looked to get into good positions, while combining well with Tau, Manyama and Vilakazi up front. Had a good effort on goal early in the first half after combining with Manyama and Vilakazi, but had his effort saved by Ndiaye. Had a quiet second half and was substituted out in the 69th minute.
Sibusiso Vilakazi - 7
Looked inspired and hungry to get involved, and showed good composure on the ball. His ability to exchange quick passes caused endless problems for the Senegalese, but was unable to get himself in front of goal. Substituted out in the 83rd minute.
Lebogang Manyama – 6
Was unlucky to hit the crossbar after a late run into the box to get onto the end of Mkhize’s cross in the 29th minute. Did well to test Ndiaye with a free-kick from outside the box on the stroke of half-time. Failed to show as much vigour in the second half and was substituted out in the 63rd minute.
Percy Tau – 6
Got into good positions but caused little threat on Ndiaye’s goal. Made a few menacing runs but couldn't get in front of goal. Combined well with Vilakazi, Manyama and Zwane, with quick exchanges of passes.
Andile Jali – 6
Replaced Manyama in the 63rd minute. Came in as Senegal started sitting back, and had to drop deep in search of the ball. Was unable to stamp his mark on the game.
Siphiwe Tshabalala – 5
Replaced Zwane in the 69th minute. Struggled to catch up with the pace of the game, and didn’t get to see much of the ball.
Replaced Vilakazi in the 83rd minute. Did not play long enough for a rating.
