Gareth Southgate reveals Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater rejected England call up over fitness concerns

Posted: 10 November 2017 Time: 12:07

England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed Danny Drinkwater turned down a call-up for the matches against Germany and Brazil due to fitness concerns.

The midfielder joined Chelsea from Leicester City on transfer deadline day but did so nursing a thigh injury which saw him only make his Blues debut against Everton last month.

Drinkwater was then amongst the substitutes for the UEFA Champions League loss to Roma and Premier League win against Manchester United last weekend, leading to his Three Lions call-up ahead of tonight’s friendly international against the Germans.

However, Southgate has revealed the 27-year-old felt he needed to turn down the call up due to concerns over his level of match fitness.

Speaking to reporters, Southgate said: "I spoke to Danny earlier in the week but he feels he is not fit enough to play."

England are using the two upcoming friendlies against Germany and Brazil as preparation for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia, having qualified top of their group.
