2018 World Cup qualifying play-off wrap 09 November 2017

Croatia secured a big victory over Greece, while Switzerland edged past Northern Ireland in Thursday's 2018 World Cup play-off ties.

Croatia 4-1 Greece

Croatia edged closer to securing a spot at the World Cup after thumping Greece 4-1 in the first leg of their play-off tie.

The hosts raced into a two-goal lead in the opening 20 minutes thanks to strikes from Luka Modric and Nikola Kalinic.

The Greeks pulled a goal back through Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos on 30 minutes, only for Ivan Perisic to bag Croatia's third three minutes later.

Croatia picked up from where they left off in the first half, as Andre Kramaric registered his name on the score-sheet in the 49th minute to make it 4-1, which also proved to be the final goal of the game.

Northern Ireland 0-1 Switzerland

Switzerland took a slight advantage in their play-off tie after claiming a 1-0 win away to Northern Ireland.

The game's only goal arrived on 58 minutes with Ricardo Rodriguez converting a penalty.
