Eric Dier believes England manager Gareth Southgate is right to keep his best players guessing after leaving out a host of stars for the matches against Germany and Brazil.
The likes of Daniel Sturridge, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jermain Defoe and Chris Smalling have all been dropped for the upcoming glamour fixtures as the Three Lions gear up for the 2018 World Cup.
And, Dier believes that will have a positive effect on the team as Southgate looks to get the best out of his squad in Russia next year.
“It is the way it has to be,” said the Spurs midfielder ahead of Friday's friendly against the Germans. |Playing for your country is the pinnacle of football.
“It is what you all want to do and it has to be special. I think that it's essential, you cannot just think you will be in every squad because you have done 'X and X' in previous years. It has to be constant.
“You always have to be on your toes to get the call-up otherwise you can become complacent and I don't think that is a good thing.”
