Coach Benni McCarthy insists Cape Town City must take it one game at a time

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy says his side need to take each game as it comes, but admits the international break has come at an opportune time for the club.

The Citizens endured a difficult October, losing the MTN8 final to SuperSport United before going on to suffer defeat in their next three fixtures on the trot, being dumped out of the Telkom Knockout in the process.

Yet despite their struggles, a narrow 1-0 victory over Free State Stars last week saw City enter the international break joint-second on the Absa Premiership table, just two points behind leaders Baroka with a game in hand.

However, even with City a win away from top spot, McCarthy insists they cannot look too far ahead.

“One step at a time,” the City coach said. “We can’t get ahead of ourselves. We just came off the back of four losses, and now there’s already talk about third, second and even first! Let me just enjoy our last victory and stop sweating for a bit, and celebrate getting that gorilla off my shoulders.

“But I’m happy, and we must just continue. I know we’ve had some setbacks, but we just have to continue fighting and take it a game at a time.”

With City only in action again on 21 November against high-flyers Bakgaga, McCarthy feels the two-week break comes at the perfect time for his side.

“We’ve got some nice extra time now, as we’re unfortunately out of the Telkom Knockout,” he said. “And I think we needed it, as the games were coming thick and fast, and it felt like we never got any breathing space.

“It’s nice going into this break knowing you have a win under the belt, and that we’re sitting on a nice position on the log after our bad patch. And now the guys can crack on and work where we can improve, so I think the break came at the right time.”
