Marseille have confirmed they will be investigating the incident which saw Patrice Evra aim a kick at one of their own supporters prior to Thursday’s UEFA Europa League loss to Vitoria Guimaraes.

The former Manchester United defender was sent off before the game had even begun after attempting a karate-style kick on a Marseille fan following an altercation between the players and supporters during pre-match.

Marseille said in a statement: "Olympique de Marseille has noted the altercation between an individual and Patrice Evra during the warm-up at the game against Guimaraes (on Thursday).

"An internal investigation has been opened to establish responsibilities.

"No matter what happens, a professional player must maintain self-control despite provocations and insults, no matter how unjustified they may be."
