Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela: You must be professional when fans get on your back

Posted: 1 November 2017 Time: 19:45

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says he doesn't take criticism from fans personally as he is a professional and understands where they are coming from.

Komphela, who is in his third season with Chiefs and is yet to win a trophy, has endured his fair share of abuse from supporters, but insists he doesn't take it to heart.

"We always enjoy support, you don't have to look at the negatives of football," said Komphela after his side played to a goalless league draw with Polokwane City at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday night.

"The one thing you must understand is it is not out of hatred but out of a love for the clubs. They love the club to bits and you have to be professional and not take it personally.

"If you take it personally then you might think otherwise. But we are professionals and if results are not forthcoming no one can be happy.

"It would be unthinkable if they were praising us if results are not coming, it is only logical. So as a human being you need to get to a level of maturity so that you can accept the circumstances and change the status quo. So we are okay with it, we appreciate their support."

Komphela has been buoyed by the support in the stands in recent games.

"It's unbelievable, it's unbelievable. Last week I spoke about it, I am praising them. Look you have got to compliment people in as much as we condemn them when they are not coming. When they come we compliment them, and it's nice when they come and you give a good performance and results - that is what they are here for."
