Telkom Knockout match report Chippa United v Mamelodi Sundowns 29 October 2017

Posted: 29 October 2017 Time: 13:57

Mamelodi Sundowns crashed out of the Telkom Knockout after losing 1-0 to Chippa United on Sunday afternoon.

Sundowns were punished by a former player of theirs, Samuel Julies, who was never able to make a mark at Chloorkop despite being a promising player. Julies scored for Chippa after coming on in the second half to make it two wins in as many matches for coach Teboho Moloi.
Thokozani Sekotlong had a great opportunity to open the scoring for Sundowns in the 10th minute after racing clear on goal, but Daniel Akpeyi did well to make a great stop, colliding with the striker in the process.
Sekotlong got a knock on his knee from the resulting challenge with the goalkeeper Akpeyi and stayed on for another 10 minutes before he was replaced by George Lebese.
After half-an-hour, there were no clear goalscoring opportunities with Masandawana threatening but lacking the final ball in the final third.
Chippa, meanwhile, spent most of the game looking to hurt Sundowns on the counter but they were wasteful in possession and turned the ball over on many occasions.
Pitso Mosimane's charges were knocking on the door towards the end of the first stanza but were repelled on numerous occasions as the half ended goalless.
Downs captain Hlompho Kekana had a chance inside the box in the 53rd minute but from a tight angle his low shot went across the face of goals.

Just minutes after coming on as a substitute, Julies opened the scoring with a poked shot at the far post, giving his side the lead in front of the home supporters.

Lebese was replaced by Leonardo Castro in the 74th minute with Mosimane looking for more firepower upfront.

Paseka Mako had an opportunity to double the lead for Moloi's troops 10 minutes before time but he had one touch too many inside the box with the goal at his mercy.

The last 10 minutes was an end-to-end affair as the Chilli Boys were catching Masandawana on counter-attacks, threatening to score the second goal, however they failed to add to the advantage as the score remained 1-0.
