Egyptian giants Al Ahly were held to a 1-1 draw by Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final on Saturday evening.
The hosts got off to the best possible start after a great ball over the Wydad defence was met by a thunderous volley from Moamen Zakaria to give his side the lead after two minutes.
Abdallah El-Said had a chance to double his side’s lead after 14 minutes but scuffed his shot in the box, and the follow up from Junior Ajayi went wide as well.
Wydad, who eliminated Mamelodi Sundowns, were searching for the equaliser and managed to find it in the first half. Achraf Bencharki’s glancing header off a Mohamed Ounajem cross saw the match level at 1-1 after just 17 minutes.
The first half ended 1-1, with both sides seeing plenty of chances in an eventful half of football.
Al Ahly looked to pick up the tempo in the second half and went in search of another goal as Wydad decided to sit back and look for the counter.
The home side had a penalty shout ignored by the referee in the 58th minute after the hosts felt Walid Azarou was impeded in the box.
Al Ahly failed to carve out any chances for the remainder of the half as Wydad looked to settle for the draw.
The match eventually ended in a 1-1 draw with Wydad taking their crucial away goal into the second leg to be played in Morocco next weekend.
