Spanish La Liga match report Athletic Bilbao v FC Barcelona 28 October 2017

Posted: 28 October 2017 Time: 20:09

Goals from Lionel Messi and Paulinho helped FC Barcelona claim a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday night.

Bilbao got off to a lively start and went close with a couple efforts from Inaki Williams in the opening 20 minutes.

Messi should have gifted Barcelona the lead after 21 minutes after rounding Kepa, but his right-footed strike hit the upright.

Messi was not to be denied in the 36th minute as the Argentine calmly slotted past Kepa from close range to hand the Catalan giants the lead.

The woodwork denied the visitors once again as Paulinho rattled the upright from close range five minutes before the break.

10 minutes into the second half, Bilbao went agonisingly close to equalising but Raul Garcia's effort hit the crossbar.

The home side continued to push for an equaliser, as Garcia unleashed a powerful strike that sailed inches wide of the upright after 71 minutes.

Bilbao carved out another chance with five minutes remaining but Marc-Andre Ter Stegen produced a fine save to keep out Aritz Aduriz's header.

However, Paulinho rounded off the scoring in the second minute of stoppage time with a simple finish from close range after Kepa had saved Luis Suarez's strike.
