Aubrey Modiba praises SuperSport United's hunger and character in cup competitions

Posted: 28 October 2017 Time: 08:00

Another knockout competition is currently underway and the big question is who will stop cup specialists SuperSport United?

Just two weeks after claiming the MTN8 title, they begin their Telkom Knockout journey against Bloemfontein Celtic on Saturday, determined to get to the final again this season to make up for losing to Cape Town City at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Since June, SuperSport have lifted two trophies – the Nedbank Cup and MTN8 – and they believe they can still clinch the Telkom Knockout and CAF Confederation Cup in what would arguably be the greatest year in their history.

“The hunger and character we have works for us [in knockout competitions],” says SuperSport left-back Aubrey Modiba ahead of the last 16 showdown against Celtic tonight [18h00].

“We work for one another and that has helped us a lot in terms of reaching cup finals. We are going to continue with that. We have very good players, experienced players. They help us as youngsters in the team on what to do to keep winning trophies.

“From the stats, you can see that we as SuperSport United are doing well. We are there with the big teams. We are humble, so we will keep working hard. Performances on the pitch will do the talking.”

The TKO is the only domestic knockout competition Modiba has not won. So as Matsatsantsa prepare to face Phunya Sele Sele tonight, Modiba is hoping it’s the beginning of another successful campaign.

“Domestically this is the trophy I have not won. Now we shift our focus to the Telkom Knockout. We are playing Celtic and they have been doing well. We are expecting a tough game. I will be happy if we get to the quarterfinal.”
