Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango is hoping they can win the Telkom Knockout

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango says they need to try end the year on a high by winning the Telkom Knockout.

Sundowns are going through a difficult period, with just three victories in six Absa Premiership matches. They were knocked out in the first round of the MTN8 and the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League.

Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to AmaZulu was Sundowns’ third at home this season, leaving them in 10th place on the standings.

Onyango, however, is confident they can bounce back and the Telkom Knockout gives them an opportunity to make up for what has been a disappointing couple of months for the Brazilians.

They face Teboho Moloi’s Chippa United away from home on Sunday in the last 16, a tricky game against a side high on confidence after this past weekend’s 2-1 victory over Cape Town City.

Following the defeat to Usuthu on Saturday, Sundowns supporters were upset with the players and did not applaud them as they usually do.

“It’s not the best start. We were knocked out of the Champions League and the MTN8. We thought that it’s the right time to get to the top of the log because we don’t have a lot of games. But unfortunately we have lost three out of six. But we still believe we can bounce back as soon as possible,” Onyango tells KickOff.com.

“They [the supporters] are very disappointed with us. We know that they are disappointed because we saw their reaction after the game against AmaZulu. We are trying our best to get back to winning ways.”

He continues: “We’ve seen this before. I remember that season (2015/2016) when we played Ajax and fans were not happy with us. But we managed to win the league that season. I think this is a wake up call for everyone. We understand their frustration and we are trying our best to get the team into the right shape.”

Sundowns last won a domestic knockout competition in 2015, when they beat Kaizer Chiefs 3-1 in the Telkom Knockout final in Durban. Onyango is hoping they can lift the trophy again to get that winning feeling back.

“We need to win something before the year ends. Telkom Knockout lies ahead, but we need to put up a big fight,” Onyango says.

“It’s very important to go through on Sunday. We are playing a good team, which is Chippa. They won their game against Cape Town City, so they will be high on confidence and it will be difficult for us. We need to fight because no one is going to give it to us easy.”
