SAFA have confirmed plans to launch a South African Super Cup tournament that will feature six teams.
The Super Cup format will be similar to the concept used by La Liga, the Football Association and CAF amongst others.
The decision was reached at the SAFA extraordinary constitutional congress last Saturday, which was attended by the likes of Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation Gert Oosthuizen as well as COSAFA president Phillip Chiyangwa.
The congress approved the idea of a SAFA Super Cup, which will be contested by four PSL teams, namely the winners of the Absa Premiership (league), MTN8, Telkom Knockout and Nedbank Cup tournaments, as well as two lower division outfits – winners of the National First Division and ABC Motsepe leagues.
Also approved at the meeting was a national women's football league, which will be contested by nine provincial teams, as well as Mamelodi Sundowns, Bloemfontein Celtic and the USSA ladies team.
Commencement dates for these showpieces have yet to be finalised.
Another reform will see the hiring of a chief operating officer as well as a group chief financial officer, to add to the current administrational team of the association.
