Ovidy Karuru opens up about his time at Kaizer Chiefs

Posted: 22 October 2017 Time: 16:00

AmaZulu’s attacking player Ovidy Karuru believes he would have shown Kaizer Chiefs supporters what he’s capable of had he been given a chance to shine at Naturena.

Karuru, who will come up against Amakhosi in the Telkom Knockout last 16, joined the Soweto giants from Belgian side Leuven in 2014 but was never able to break into the starting lineup.

The Zimbabwean made five substitute appearances in two seasons at Chiefs, but says he will not be out to prove anything when he faces his former employers.

“You gain confidence when you are playing. If you are not playing, you lose confidence. You’ll ask yourself what you are doing wrong. But if you play one, two or three games ... if you fail then you have no one to blame,” he said.

“The games I managed to play [at Chiefs] are either cup games or I came in as a substitute. I never started a league game at Chiefs. That thing blew my confidence away. But if I got a chance to play, I am sure we would be talking a different story now. There’s no hard feelings, it happens in football.”

He added: “People will think I want to prove myself. I am a team player. When I play I don’t have to play for myself for people to see me. I have to play for the team, so that we can go forward.”

Karuru, who has started four of his side’s eight Absa Premiership matches this season, is enjoying life at Usuthu where he is one of the senior players.

“I am just there to help the youngsters to do well, so that they can join big clubs. We have a young team, so we are here to motivate them,” he said.
