Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune hails father figure Kaizer Motaung

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune says Kaizer Motaung has always been a father figure to him.

Khune has grown up under the Chiefs chairman, having made his PSL debut for Amakhosi over a decade ago against Jomo Cosmos on August 25, 2007.

The 30-year-old has gone on to become the country's premier keeper, winning numerous awards along the way. He received his latest accolade last week when he was named the Absa Premiership Player of the Month for August/September.

“The chairman is very humble,” Khune told the club's website today on the 73rd birthday of Motaung.

“He’s a real father figure to me, not only when it comes to soccer advice, but also about life in general. Besides that, his door is always open.”

Khune came for trials at Naturena in 1999 and garnered attention from Motaung following his display in a reserve team match against Bidvest Wits five years later. Motaung advised coach Ted Dumitru and his assistant Farouk Khan to take a closer look at Khune.

“The chairman knew that Brian Baloyi was leaving the club in 2004,” Khune reflected. “He was obviously happy with what he had seen of me. This rubbed off and it highly motivated me. Later on, it helped my younger brother Lucky as well.”

The Bafana Bafana star had a message for Motaung on his birthday.

“Mister chairman, please always be the figure that you are, both for the club and the nation as a whole. Happy birthday, may you see many more.”
