Asamoah scores for Udinese

Black Stars midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah opened his Serie A goal account on Sunday and declared his desire to travel the path that some of his more famous compatriots have travelled to greatness.

Asamoah’s angled shot on 9 minutes at the end of a quick counter attack for his first goal reward for a season during which he has increasingly become important to Udinese with his strong tackling, close ball control and ability to pick the right pass. Udinese went on to beat Fiorintina 3-1.   He has been omnipresent for Udinese lately in their Seri A as well as their aborted UEFA Cup campaign and says a lot of that is down to patience.   “When I went to Italy, I did not understand the language so it took time to settle,” said the former Liberty Professionals man who joined the Fruili outfit in January 2008. “Now the coach has noticed I am doing well and can understand the language.”   Asamoah says his breakthrough came when he turned a game against Sampdoria on its head after coming on as a substitute.   “Everything is about time and hard work. The fact that I am playing does not mean I should slow down. If I was training once, now I will train twice.  I am not where I am yet so I will keep trying.”   Udinese is proving to be a good beginning ground for Ghanaian footballers. Mohammed Gargo skippered them for a while before Stephen Appiah and Sulley Muntari both made career starts there before moving on to bigger things.   Asamoah Gyan, like Muntari and Kwadwo Asamoah also joined Udinese from Liberty Professionals before going on to Rennes.   “Udinese likes young players because they can train them and later on sell them to big teams. Every time Ghanaian players have gone there they have distinguished themselves and is proving a good start. Maybe if I had started at Milan or Juve it may have taken time.”
