Michael Morton puzzled by PSL charge in connection with Hellings Mhango clash

Posted: 11 October 2017 Time: 14:30

AmaZulu midfielder Michael Morton awaits clarity from the PSL's Disciplinary Committee after being accused of 'offending the dignity' of Hellings Mhango.

The PSL is charging both players with misconduct after they clashed in a league game between Usuthu and Bidvest Wits at Princess Magogo Stadium on September 20.

Morton was sent off by referee Eksetsang Setloboko late in the game for retaliation when he shoved Mhango to the ground after the Malawian spat in his face. Mhango escaped the flashing of a card from Setloboko.

The league sent out a statement yesterday, which gave Morton the impression he has been accused of spitting at Mhango.

Part of the statement reads: 'BIDVEST WITS and GABADINHO MHANGO:
Mr Mhango has been charged with misconduct for allegedly offending the dignity of Amazulu FC player, Michael Morton following an alleged spitting incident on 20 September 2017 at the Princess Magogo Stadium.

'AMAZULU FC and MICHAEL MORTON:
Mr Morton has also been charged with misconduct for allegedly offending the dignity of Bidvest Wits FC player Gabadinho Mhango, following a further alleged spitting incident on 20 September 2017 at the Princess Magogo Stadium.'

Morton said on Twitter this morning: "Did I retaliate in an overly aggressive way to an incident? 100%. Did I react by ‘spitting back’? Absolutely NOT (disgraced by the accusation)."

When contacted by KickOff.com, Morton was reluctant to comment until after his DC hearing on October 18.

"I don't know. Apparently I've been accused of spitting back at Mhango so I don't know," he said.

"No one saw me spitting back, so I don't know where that's come from.

"I agree that I was wrong that I retaliated. That was definitely wrong but definitely I would never, ever spit back at someone. That's not my character."
