Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy praises newcomer Craig Martin

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has heaped praise on lesser-known recruit Craig Martin, lauding his first two appearances for the Cape club.

The 24-year-old right wing-back arrived at the Citizens with much less fanfare than new teammates Ayanda Patosi, Teko Modise and Victor Obinna, having been brought in after rising to prominence at local Cape clubs Kensington FC, Hellenic and Glendene.

Martin received his first taste of Absa Premiership football as a substitute in City’s 1-0 victory over Polokwane City last month, before somewhat surprisingly being given a start in his side’s Cape derby victory over Ajax Cape Town.

And McCarthy was left more than impressed with his player’s contribution in that game.

“In the previous match [against Polokwane City] he came in and did remarkably, and in the derby he did the exact job that I asked of him,” McCarthy said.

“He defended well and helped out [Thamsanqa] Mkhize very well – I asked him to keep [Mosa] Lebusa quiet, and that’s exactly what he did. He’s a player for the future, he’s young and has a lot of learning to do.”

McCarthy feels despite no previous topflight experience, Martin has acquitted himself well and has even established a fan base of his own as he continues to impress for his hometown club.

“We threw him in, and he handled the pressure very well,” McCarthy said.

“He’s even got his own healthy fanbase there. I think he’s been extraordinary, I’m very happy and pleased with his performances.”

Following his good derby showing, Martin has surely put up his hand to retain his place in the starting line-up ahead of Saturday’s MTN8 final against SuperSport United, taking place at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Kick-off is set for 19h00.
