Arjen Robben retires from international football after Netherlands miss World Cup ticket

Posted: 11 October 2017 Time: 09:21

Arjen Robben has announced his retirement from international football after the Netherland’s 2018 World Cup disappointment.

The Dutch will not be part of next year’s Russia showpiece, despite Bayern Munich star Robben’s match-winning brace against Sweden on Tuesday as they needed a 7-0 win to progress to the playoffs.

"I wanted to show one more time all the things that I can do," Robben said after the game.

The winger brings the curtain down on an international career which has seen him score 37 goals in 96 appearances, while he also helped the Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup final, where they lost to Spain.

Robben continued: "Fourteen years, it's beautiful, magnificent even.

"I will always remember the 2010 World Cup and 2014. Those are my best memories. During those two competitions we formed a real team."
