Orlando Pirates coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic has noticed smaller crowds on PSL return

Orlando Pirates coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic says he has noticed the drop in stadium attendance compared to the first time he coached in the PSL back in 2006.

Now in his second spell with the Buccaneers, Micho would like to see the Soweto giants playing the type of football that will have supporters coming back to the stadium in numbers.

Pirates struggle to have good crowds at Orlando Stadium and the coach would really like this to improve, as he aims to make the venue a fortress for the Buccaneers.

Sredojevic pointed to the amount of games shown on television, both local and international, as one of the reasons supporters are staying away from the stadium.

“I have sensed, and this is my opinion, that we had a bit more people at that time [in 2006]. People are spoilt for choice now [on television]. They can watch English football, they can watch our football, sitting on their sofas,” Sredojevic tells

“It is totally different to watching on TV and watching it live at the stadium. I would be the most happy person if we are playing a good enough brand of football that will once more attract people to come back to the stadium.

“We need to investigate what the problem is; whether people are spoilt for choice and would rather sit on their sofas and watch the game, or we could provide something interesting which could attract the fans to come back to the stadiums.

“I would be happy if we can push football in that direction where we have people coming to the stadium and we really fulfil the mission of making people happy.”

It was evident in the poor attendance for the Bafana Bafana and Burkina Faso match at FNB Stadium that there is a problem, but clubs and officials don't seem to be doing enough to get bums on seats on match day.

The Buccaneers, meanwhile, have been hard at training during the international break, preparing for their next Absa Premiership encounter against Platinum Stars next Wednesday.

Pirates only had two players away during the international break in goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands and Zambian striker Justin Shonga. So this gave Micho a good chance to work on problem areas with almost his entire squad.
