Sports Minister Thulas Nxesi has called on South Africans to show their patriotism and get behind Bafana Bafana.
Bafana revived hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup with a 3-1 win over Burkina Faso at a near-empty FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Nxesi joined the players in the dressing room after the Group D tie.
"It was a great performance. It was a great game. The nation is happy," said Nxesi, who has taken over the investigation into the two fan deaths at the Carling Black Label Champion Cup on July 29.
"All those who didn't come to support Bafana Bafana, maybe they might be regretting because they should be here singing directly live themselves.
"I always believe that whether the team is performing bad or winning, we as supporters must always come to the stadium in order to be behind the club. Winning or not winning we must be loyal to our team."
He added: "Sport is very important in the sense that it plays that role of nation building, that role of social cohesion. It's very important that we build that spirit of patriotism through sport by coming to the stadium and celebrate together, both black and white."
Stuart Baxter's side must beat Senegal in back-to-back matches on 10 and 14 November to earn a spot at Russia 2018.
