Maritzburg United's young midfielder Mlondi Dlamini has passed away following a car accident on Sunday morning.
Dlamini, who didn't play this season due to a fractured fibula, was 20 years old.
He was promoted to the Maritzburg first team at the beginning of last season along with Siphesihle Ndlovu, Luyanda Ntshangase and Bandile Shandu. At the time Ernst Middendorp was coach and Dlamini only played six league games for the Team of Choice.
Maritzburg's chairman Farook Kadodia says Dlamini passed away on Sunday in a car accident. Maritzburg will release a statement once they have gathered information from the police on Monday.
"It was a car accident and the club will make an official statement tomorrow morning. We were only aware of this earlier this afternoon," Kadodia says.
"We want the parents to come back from the police station because we were only informed now about the loss. So the club will make a statement tomorrow morning."
This is the second year running Maritzburg have lost one of their players. Mondli 'Sgora' Cele, who was 27 at that time, also passed away on January 17 last year after scoring in a 3-3 draw against Orlando Pirates the night before.
KickOff.com would like to send its heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Dlamini.
