Former Real Madrid defender Ricardo Carvalho sentenced to seven months jail for tax offences

Posted: 6 October 2017 Time: 19:35

Former Real Madrid defender Ricardo Carvalho has been sentenced to seven months in prison and fined €142,822 for tax offences between 2011 and 2012.

The ex-Portugal international has accepted the Madrid magistrate court’s sentence and his full cooperation in proceedings saw his proposed sentence of one year in prison and a €300k fine reduced.

The former Porto, Chelsea and Monaco centre-back’s case was also helped by the fact he paid back the full amount owed of €545,981.03.

The sentence means the 39-year-old’s playing days are likely over, with the defender having still been plying his trade at Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG up until his sentencing.
