FIFA president Gianni Infantino insists the bidding for the 2026 World Cup will be as “transparent as it can get” following the controversy surrounding the winners of hosting rights for 2018 and 2022.
Russia have been handed the honour of staging next year’s finals while Qatar won the right for the following instalment, although both those bids were steeped in claims of bribery and corruption.
Infantino has since revealed that world football’s governing body will do their utmost to avoid the same issues in the next bid after releasing a statement in the latest issue of the FIFA magazine.
“The process is as objective and transparent as it can get,” he wrote.
“Every step of the bidding process will be open to public examination – and, for the first time, the process will be scrutinised by an independent audit company.”
