Pitso Mosimane believes Bafana Bafana can still qualify for the World Cup but has stressed South African football should not lose sight of the bigger picture if the team comes up short.
Bafana face an uphill task to reach Russia 2018 as they are bottom of Group D with a point from three games.
Stuart Baxter's men on Saturday afternoon host Burkina Faso at FNB Stadium before concluding their campaign with back-to-back matches with Senegal.
Mamelodi Sundowns mentor Mosimane, who coached Bafana from 2010 to 2012, has offered words of support for the national team.
“In football anything is possible and I have seen things happening, especially when the chips are down,” Mosimane told his club's website.
“We are an amazing football nation and we have done amazing stuff in football.
“We have a very good team to take us beyond World Cup qualifiers. We need to use this programme seriously to build for the CAF Cup Of Nations qualifiers.
“We should not be short-sighted and have short-term visions like we always do. We have to give our best on this programme but also not dismantle everything in case we don't qualify. Patience, lack of fear and belief is what we need.
“We must give our best at times irrespective of the results and when you do that consistently, something will give in. That is the mentality we have at Mamelodi Sundowns in the Champions League hence we have gone that far.
“We couldn’t defend the cup, but domestically we consistently have to qualify for the Champions League.
“I want to wish Stuart and our boys all the best of luck.”
