Long break for wounded Ajax

Ajax Cape Town coach Stanley Menzo admits his side have a lot of hard work to do in the FIFA international break, which he feels will drag on for that much longer following his side's derby loss.

The 2-0 reverse to Cape Town City – a third derby defeat on the trot – compounded the Urban Warriors’ woes, with their inconsistent start to the season leaving them 13th on the log after six games played.

With the two-week FIFA international break upon us, Menzo feels the derby loss came at an inopportune moment, yet hopes to use the down time to rectify certain areas where his side are lacking.

“Yes and no,” he said when asked if the break came at a good time. “No, because this game [the derby] will stay in our minds for the next two weeks – your last game still remains in your mind, which is a loss.

“On the other hand, it may give us time to work on certain things – again, I was disappointed in our derby result, and not the effort the players gave, as they worked hard. But we didn’t create enough chances, and in the final third we were not good enough, and that’s where you have to score to win a game. And that’s what we have to work on.”

Despite the obvious disappointment with the defeat, Menzo said he enjoyed his first home derby as a coach, attended by 17 100 people at Cape Town Stadium, which he felt was good for Cape Town football.

“I enjoyed the fans – it was a nice atmosphere in the stadium, which was good for the city, for football and for Cape Town,” he said. “Hopefully we can play more derbies like this. And you saw the things that happened in this derby at the end – frustration from our side, which was not good, but it’s part of a derby, and then the crowds, the fans, it was good.

“If it’s a normal game, I want to win it, and of course the derby as well, but when you lose it, it’s obviously very disappointing.”

Ajax’s next fixture is a trip to Free State Stars on Wednesday, 18 October.
