Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Lebogang Mothibantwa has resigned as assistant coach of Super Eagles.

Mothibantwa helped the club gain promotion to the NFD under Tshegofatso Mashego last term shortly after retiring from football.

However, he quit the team after a 1-0 win over Real Kings on the weekend - much to the surprise of Eagles manager Tsoaledi Moloi.

"Lebo never showed signs of dissatisfaction in the team," says Moloi. "We played against Real Kings and went home. We were surprised when the following day he handed in his resignation letter.

"It's sad for everyone in the club but we have to make the players understand that it is part of football.

"We still have to sit down as management and decide on his replacement."

Eagles, who are seventh in the second-tier standings with eight points from six games, next host University of Pretoria on October 14.
