Spain coach Julen Lopetegui defends Gerard Pique after Barcelona defender is booed at training

Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has leapt to Gerard Pique’s defence after the Barcelona defender was booed while training with the national team on Monday.

Pique this week threatened to quit La Furia Roja if his stance on Catalonia’s independence referendum was a problem, a statement which has irked certain section of Spanish fans.

Lopetegui, though, feels Pique is undeserving of jeers from his compatriots, telling Spanish radio station COPE: “I don't go in and out of ideas. Gerard's behaviour is exceptional.

“I wanted to know how he was and I've seen him willing and motivated. He is well and motivated. If it were not so, he wouldn't be with me.”

Spain currently lead World Cup qualifying Group G by three points with two games remaining, which come against Albania and Israel this month.
