Khama guides Downs to narrow win

Posted: 1 October 2017 Time: 12:54

Khama Billiat's first-half strike was enough to hand Mamelodi Sundowns a 1-0 win over Platinum Stars on Sunday afternoon.

Sundowns struck inside two minutes as Hlompho Kekana's long ball found Billiat, who controlled well and fired into the far corner.

Dikwena, meanwhile, were on the back foot from the onset and only looked to threaten the visitors on the counter.

Sundowns could have doubled the lead on 22 minutes, but Sibusio Vilakazi blazed over the crossbar from six yards out.

Pitso Mosimane's charges continued to dominate and they nearly added a second in the 40th minute but Billiat was denied by a fine save from Mbongani Mzimela.

That proved to be the final chance of the half, as the visitors went into the break leading by one goal.

Sundowns picked up from where they left off in the second half, with Percy Tau and Billiat causing trouble in the final third.

Mosimane opted for a change on the hour mark, as Cuthbert Malajila replaced the ineffective Vilakazi.

Mzimela came to Stars' rescue on 72 minutes, as he did well to keep out Kekana's powerful free-kick from 25 yards out.

Sundowns thought they had a second goal after 77 minutes, but Tau's calm finish was ruled out for offside.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, Roger de Sa introduced Lehlogonolo Masalesa as they pushed for a winning goal.

However, the Brazilians' defence proved to resolute for the Dikwena attack, as the visitors held on for three points.
