Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has been left out of Germany's squad for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers

Germany head coach Joachim Low has omitted Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil from the squad ahead of their final two World Cup qualifiers, against Northern Ireland and Azerbaijan.

The playmaker has endured a slow start to the 2017/18 season while a knee injury kept him on the bench for the Gunners 2-0 win over West Brom on Monday.

As such, Ozil finds himself out of the reckoning during the international break, although Low said the decision was based more on the midfielder’s fitness and less on his dip in form.

Speaking of Ozil, who joins Sami Khedira in missing a spot in the Germany squad, Low said: "With Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira, I assume that they will be better rested during the international break.

“This is more important to them at the moment. What is crucial to us is that our players are in peak condition next year.”

Germany look all but assured their place in Russia 2018 as they currently lead qualifying Group C by five points with just two games remaining.
