Fan incentive at Cape Derby

The Cape derby is the next stop in Absa’s “Woza Nazo” campaign, with fans at Cape Town Stadium in line to win R1 million.

The league sponsors launched the campaign at the start of the season, selecting various high-profile clashes across the season where fans are able to “Kick for R1 million” – an incentive rewarding supporters out in the stands watching their team.

Saturday’s Cape derby between Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City hosts the second leg of the campaign, following the same incentive at the Tshwane derby in August, with six lucky fans in line to win cash prizes, and the winner a trip to the finals to fight it out for the ultimate grand prize.

“How it works is that in each of the rivalry matches we have in 10 different cities, this week being one of them, at half-time we will choose six audience members watching the game: three who will come from the Absa Red Zone and three from the general public,” Absa’s Haroon Abrahams explained.

“They’ll all enter a kick-off with one of the top goalkeepers to a sudden death. The last man standing then gets entered into the final. There will be 10 finalists at the end, so this weekend’s winner will get a chance to get to that final.

“The prizes for this weekend are as follows: all of the six at every game get R1 000 just for being selected and participating. The winner of that particular match gets R5 000 plus an entry into the final, and in the final, the last man – or woman – standing will win R1 million.”

Abrahams feels the campaign is helping lift the profile of football both locally and across the country, and hopes Capetonians will respond in kind on Saturday.

“This is an awesome opportunity for Absa and South Africa overall, but for Cape Town specifically, it’s a chance for us to put some pride back into the city, and regardless of which team you are supporting,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for all South Africans in Cape Town to be part of the excitement and beautiful game – that’s the hype we want to be a part of.”

Kick-off at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday is set for 15h00.
