McCarthy welcomes idea of video refs

Benni McCarthy says he’s open to the somewhat unrealistic idea of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in the PSL, while opposite number Stanley Menzo feels match officials are getting too much attention ahead of the Cape derby.
Amid the hype of this weekend’s clash between Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City has been the questionable refereeing in the Absa
Premiership lately, with the topic brought up in a joint press conference held between the two Cape clubs ahead of their derby encounter.
McCarthy, whose side bore the brunt of a dubious off-side call in their last fixture against Polokwane City, hopes Saturday’s match official adjudicates fairly in his first derby as head coach.
“People pay their money to come watch good football, and for games to be cancelled out because of bad refereeing [is unfair], so all I ask for is a good and fair referee who is into the game as there’ll be a lot of tension between the two sides,” he said. “It’ll also be physical, and I don’t want a referee who will spoil a good game of football. The guys know they will be able to play to the best of their abilities if the referee is having a good game.”
Menzo preferred not to comment too much about the officials, feeling that they have been given too much attention of late.
“We need the referees, but we have to play our own game, and not worry about them too much,” he said. “We don’t have an influence on their way of refereeing – the only thing we can influence is our own game.
“I don’t want to spend too much energy on referees – we are giving them too much attention at this moment. Let them do their job – they have to do their job, and that’s all we ask of them.”
When asked about the possibility of Video Assistant Referees in the PSL, McCarthy said he’d welcome the idea, though is fully aware of the budget limitations in South African football.
“If the PSL has La Liga, or Premier League or the Bundesliga’s budget, then we can have something like that, but unfortunately I don’t think we’re there yet,” he said. “But yes, that would be nice as I’ve complained over the last two games about the referees, with incidents that cost us, and almost cost us again on the weekend [against Polokwane City], but it would be nice if that could be introduced into our game.”
