A rivalry, a title up for grabs and a capacity crowd to witness it all – the 2017 Varsity Football final was a spectacle not to be missed.
Tshwane University saw their undefeated streak and their title fall away after losing 2–0 to neighbours and new champions University of Pretoria. The match took place on Thursday evening in front of a sold out TUT stadium.
The first goal of the game was scored as early as the 23rd minute when Tuks’ Simbongile Njokwe headed in a well-taken corner. The game went back-and-forth as both sides relentlessly pushed to get the better of the other, adding to the high energy of the occasion. The score stayed 1-0 until striker Odwa Makha doubled the visitors' lead with an instinctive finish following another set-piece as Tuks claimed a third Varsity Football title.
Earlier TUT won the Women's Varsity Football final with a 4-0 trouncing of UJ.
Bontle Mashilo, Rachel Sebati, Kgomotso Mashiloane and Refiloe Jane got the goals.
