Mamelodi Sundowns skipper Hlompho Kekana was surprised by his nomination for the Gauteng Sport Awards, and has appealed to supporters for their vote.
Kekana has enjoyed a superb year with The Brazilians, leading the club to their maiden CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup titles, while continuing to play a pivotal role in midfield.
The 32-year-old stalwart has since earned a nomination for the Sports Personality of the Year award, which is voted for by the public, and says it comes as massive motivation to push on.
“It’s something I never thought would come – the Gauteng Sports Awards, I never anticipated such,” Kekana tells KickOff.com.
“It’s exciting to be part of the event, and it will obviously help me to grow in terms of my confidence.
“Whoever nominated me must have seen something in me, so I’m very happy and I appreciate the nomination. It comes as motivation [to keep on going].”
The Bafana Bafana international believes being nominated alongside Banyana Banyana skipper Janine van Wyk and athletes Luvo Manyonga and Sheldon Thomas is an honour in itself.
“I think all the nominees deserve to win but whoever wins will show how far they came. So we just have to appreciate the opportunity [to be nominated] and we need to enjoy this moment,” he adds.
I just want to thank the Mamelodi Sundowns fans for their support throughout the years, and their continued support for us.
"I want to keep entertaining them and make sure that I help the team win matches for them. Obviously their votes for me would go a long way and be much appreciated.”
