Diego Simeone admits Atletico Madrid were second best in UEFA Champions League loss to Chelsea

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone admitted his side were second best after suffering a 2-1 defeat at home against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

The La Liga giants had opened the scoring during last night’s Group C encounter through Antoine Griezmann’s first-half penalty, only to see Alvaro Morata equalise after the break before Michy Batshuayi struck a 94th-minute winner.

The result left Atletico with just one point from their opening two group-stage matches, leaving them three points adrift of second-placed AS Roma, and Simeone admitted his side had little answer to Chelsea in all areas of the pitch.

"Chelsea were the better team. The draw was a good result for us, but at the very end they had the patience to move the ball around very well and scored at the last second," said the coach.

"We couldn't really play our game because our rival was better. They had better intensity, they were better at a tactical level.

"We were never comfortable. It was a fair victory for Chelsea because they just played better."
