Booysen: Focus on Baroka, not derby

Ajax Cape Town defender Mario Booysen insists his side need to maintain their focus on Saturday’s clash against Baroka, and not next weekend’s derby battle against city rivals Cape Town City.
The Urban Warriors are in Limpopo ahead of their clash against joint table-toppers Bakgaga, yet admittedly have one eye on next weekend’s highly-anticipated fixture against City – a derby fixture they lost in both match-ups last season.
Yet new arrival Booysen knows his side cannot look too far ahead as they target a second league victory in a row on Saturday.
“We have to take it one game at a time,” he said. “We have to focus fully on Baroka, and leave the derby for next week. I know as players we are looking forward to next week, but Baroka is just as big as the derby because it’s three points on offer at the end of the day.
“So yes, we have the upcoming derby in our minds, but if we win against Baroka, we will head into that game with confidence, so we have to apply ourselves properly in this game first.”
The Cape-born defender arrived as a deadline day signing at Ikamva last month, and after his side’s inconsistent start to the season, admits there’s still a lot to improve on as the Ajax team look for cohesion and results on the pitch.
“It’s obviously nice to be back in Cape Town,” he said. “I missed pre-season with the club, but I think it was a good time to come in and work together with the guys. Obviously we’re only four games into the season, we conceded a very soft goal against Pirates, but we kept a clean sheet in the last game which is a confidence booster, and as much as we played okay, I think there’s lots of room for improvement as a team.
“Going forward, it’s about gelling and understanding each other more. I’m a Cape Town boy, and it’s not difficult for me to settle in, so now it’s all about our performances and attitude.”
