Bidvest Wits defender Buhle Mkhwanazi set for November return from injury

Posted: 22 September 2017 Time: 15:15

Bidvest Wits defender Buhle Mkhwanazi could return to action in around six weeks.

Mkhwanazi has been the Absa Premiership champions’ missing link in their defense, which has seen them leak 15 goals in eight games this season.

The towering centre-back suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury towards the end of last term, and was forced to undergo surgery in May.

Wits physiotherapist Nick Brink says the 27-year-old has been progressing well in his recovery, and is just over a month short of his return.

“Buhle is four-and-a-half months along, his perceived return to training is at the end of October, beginning of November,” Brink confirms to

“He’s working hard with his rehab, he’s doing ball work at the moment. He’s jumping, he’s sprinting, he’s changing direction, so he’s doing very well.

“It’s difficult to put him ahead of schedule because it takes time for the ligament to heal, and it’s got to get the whole six months to get the ligament back to full strength. Mentally he’s ahead of schedule.”

The Clever Boys’ next test comes against Orlando Pirates at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday evening (18h00).
