Round one of the 2017 Women’s Varsity Football competition saw plenty of goals last night as teams sought the early initiative.
Defending champions Tshwane University of Technology got off to a perfect start by putting three goals past the University of Cape Town without reply. TUT looked promising from the opening whistle, swiftly creating chances and putting the UCT defence under pressure. This constant attack led to captain Kgomotso Mashiloane putting her name on the scoresheet for the Tshwane side. Two goals soon followed, both coming from Katlego Khwinana to leave the score at 3–0.
Another side which enjoyed a three-goal victory was the University of Western Cape, who faced North West University in the late game on Thursday evening. An own goal from NWU opened the scoring, followed by a penalty which was calmly finished by UWC’s Thalea Smidt. The final blow was delivered when Jaime-Lee Peters fired home for the Bellville-based side.
