Mamelodi Sundowns are unbeaten away from home in this year’s CAF Champions League and goalkeeper Denis Onyango believes this puts them in a good position to overcome Wydad Casablanca.

Sundowns have a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg which was played at Lucas Moripe Stadium, and they head into the return encounter confident of getting the desired result at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Saturday.

Onyango knows that a clean sheet would send Sundowns through to the semi-final for a second time in a row, which means his defence will have to be switched on for the entire game.

But it won’t be easy against a Wydad side which scored five goals in three home matches during the group stages.

“We were expecting to get at least two or three goals [in the first leg], but one goal is still okay because we are still in the lead. We just need to defend our lead and stay focused for the entire 90 minutes,” Onyango tells KickOff.com.

“It was very crucial to keep a clean sheet because we have been conceding lately and it was not nice for the guys. But keeping it clean in the last game shows that the team is becoming stronger and I believe we will get the momentum as we continue to play.”

He continues: “We are playing a good team that has been scoring at home, but we believe we can make it happen because we have managed to get the results in some games away from home. All we need is a clean sheet to go through. If we play to our potential I think we can get the results.”

Sundowns are determined to join the likes of Al Ahly, TP Mazembe and Enyimba as clubs who have defended the Champions League.

“It would be fantastic to defend the title and going to the [Club] World Cup again would be amazing, but we are taking it one game at a time,” he says.
