Chelsea manager Antonio Conte expects David Luiz to play against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, despite nursing a broken wrist.
The Brazilian suffered the injury after colliding with the advertising boards during last week’s goalless draw against Arsenal, before being sent off late on and subsequently handed a three-match ban.
That meant he missed Wednesday’s Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest and will also be ineligible for the upcoming Premier League matches against Stoke City and Manchester City.
As such, Conte is hoping to field the defender in the European Cup next Wednesday, saying: “He [Luiz] must be okay.
“David is an important player for us. For sure he will be ready for the game against Atletico Madrid.”
Looking ahead to the fourth round of the League Cup, where Chelsea have been drawn against Everton, Conte admits he will most likely stick with the same team that thrashed Forest.
The coach said: “We are a great club, for this reason, every competition is important to us. If we answer like this tonight, why not continue to give the opportunity to these players?”
