Cape Town City captain Robyn Johannes is confident they’ll bounce back against his former club Orlando Pirates in the Absa Premiership at Orlando Stadium tonight (19h30).
The 31-year-old defender spent two seasons at Pirates and described winning the treble in his first year with the Soweto giants as a very “special moment” in his career.
Johannes is not the only former Buccaneer in the City camp. His coach Benni McCarthy, players Lehlohonolo Majoro, Tshepo Gumede and the doubtful Teko Modise have also donned the famous black and white jersey. But Johannes maintains it will be business as usual as the Citizens look to bounce back from last week's 2-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs.
“Firstly, I need to say that I can’t fault the boys for their efforts last week against Kaizer Chiefs as they gave as best they could,” Johannes told KickOff.com.
“I’m expecting pretty much the same against Pirates, but we’ll have to be more clinical in front of goal as that was our undoing against Chiefs.
He continued: “We’ve created numerous chances against Chiefs but couldn’t convert them. I’m confident we can rectify that going forward. We’ll bounce back as we always do, you know.”
Johannes has seen some improvement in the Pirates side of late, after a horrible campaign last season.
“Pirates are showing signs of improvement and we are aware that they always pose a threat. But our players will be up for the challenge as games against Chiefs, Pirates and [Mamelodi] Sundowns you don't need further motivation.”
The defeat to Amakhosi was City's first of the season and Johannes stated that it was a blessing in disguise.
“It reminded us how difficult and unpredictable the PSL is. You can’t take any team lightly or for granted.
“It’s important we also keep on perfecting the basics and play to our strengths. And like I said we’ll bounce back and hopefully we can do it against Pirates,” Johannes concluded.
Modise, meanwhile, is fighting his way back to fitness and the club is hoping he will be available for the MTN8 final against SuperSport United on 14 October at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.
