The progress Bongani Zungu is making in Europe has inspired former Mamelodi Sundowns teammate Themba Zwane, who has not given up on making a move abroad.

The 28-year-old Zwane would still like to see himself playing in Europe and is hoping the exposure he keeps getting in the CAF Champions League, and when on national team duty with Bafana Bafana, will finally open doors to a dream move.

Since leaving Sundowns last year, Zungu has done extremely well and earned himself a move to French Ligue 1 side Amiens SC from Portuguese outfit Vitoria Guimaraes on transfer deadline day in August.

“I get inspired because I have been talking to him [Zungu]. Even when we were in the national team he was telling me how teams overseas operate and he was saying that the level is high that side and that they learn a lot,” Zwane tells KickOff.com.

“He motivated me a lot because I have a dream to go overseas. In order for me to go that side, I need to work harder. It helps when you perform in the Champions League because there are many scouts who have the teams. Even when I play for the national team I need to perform because you never know who is watching, so it helps a lot.”

Zwane spoke of how they miss Zungu in central midfield, but says they have found good replacements in Tiyani Mabunda, Lucky Mohomi and more recently Oupa Manyisa, who is playing alongside captain Hlompho Kekana.

“We miss Zungu, but obviously there’s new players who have come in and they filled his space. He made things easy for us as attackers because he would sit back and intercept those balls,” he says.

Zwane travelled with the Sundowns team on Monday night for the Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Wydad Casablanca on Saturday. The game will be played on Saturday night.

Sundowns got a good send off from their supporters at OR Tambo International Airport.
