Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela wary of desperate Bidvest Wits

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela feels they are playing Bidvest Wits at the wrong time, when their opponents are looking to get the monkey off their back with a first win of the season.

Amakhosi, who host the reigning league champions at FNB Stadium on Saturday (18h00), registered their first victory of the season in the Mother City against Cape Town on Wednesday, winning 2-0 in front of a good crowd at Cape Town Stadium.

Chiefs are determined to build on the positive result, but Komphela is wary of a Wits side that is struggling at the moment, knowing that their fortunes could turn at any time.

Wits are yet to win a match this season and they have conceded six goals in three league encounters. Wits’ latest setback was on Wednesday when they were beaten 3-1 at home by Golden Arrows.

“Going into Bidvest Wits, we know how difficult it is to play a team that is not performing that well, knowing the quality they have. I am sure Gavin Hunt is not the happiest right now, which makes the job difficult for us over the weekened,” Komphela said.

“As we usually say, it’s an opportunity to go again and try get three points. We play them at the wrong time, just when they are extremely wounded and it’s not going to be an easy one.”

Komphela says he knows what Wits are going through, because Amakhosi have gone through periods where positive results are hard to come by.

“It does not change who they are, they remain a lion. Limping as they are it’s a huge challenge. We have been there, we know how it feels to go through a bad patch.

“Now we as Chiefs are saying we have to concentrate. This is a time that mentally we have to be at our best. If you go there complacent, against somebody who is unbelievably focused, it’s a big challenge. Where they are, they are desperate to win.”
