Cape Town City coach Benni MCarthy taking notes from Steve Komphela

Posted: 15 September 2017 Time: 11:33

Forget the quirky English, Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela is an intelligent tactician with rich experience.

This is according to Cape Town City counterpart Benni McCarthy, whose five-game winning streak was snapped with a 2-0 defeat to Chiefs on Wednesday.

McCarthy, who is in his first head coaching job with City, expressed his respect for the fellow ex-Bafana Bafana star after the game at Cape Town Stadium.

"Me and Steve go way back to when I was young in Amsterdam and Steve was in Turkey, so there was always that respect," said the former Ajax Amsterdam striker.

"Steve always gave me advice as a player. I am a big supporter of Steve because of his experience. He was one of the most intelligent footballers that we had in this country back in the day and now as a coach.

"Even though the media like to slam him and the fans, saying you need a dictionary for his English, Steve is a smart guy. He has always given me fantastic advice. So we just exchanged a few words [at the final whistle] on his situation and him being happy for me and how things are going and, just that sort of thing... just management advice really. Like I said I'm a freshman and he's a senior pro."
