Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hailed the impact of defender John Stones following his two-goal haul in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus completed the rout at De Kuip, but Guardiola made special mention of Stones, while also tipping the 23-year-old to become one of Europe’s best defenders.

"There is no doubt about his [Stones’] quality. His two goals were so important,” said Guardiola.

"John knows what is the gap and where he has to improve, defending the duels, but he's so young and he is able to achieve.

"When he does, he will become an exceptional central defender."
